Believe it or not, this beautiful horse was left to die when his owner died a year and a half ago. The owner’s son, who lived right across the street, decided that, since he and his dad didn’t get along, he would just let Hank and his pasturemate rot in a poorly fenced, sparse field. He foundered, badly, and was barely more than skin and bone. Hank and his buddy (who got out and was hit by a car) lived in the terrible conditions for months before my cousins saved him. He could barely get onto their trailer when they picked him up, he was so weak and starved.
Now, a year and a half and about 6 or 700 pounds later, Hank is enjoying his life as the “barn mascot” of my cousins’ farm. He gets to hang out with a little herd, gets the farrier attention he needs, and always has grain and hay available to him.
He is one of the most sweet and good natured horses I’ve ever met. Somehow, he trusts people even after all the shit people have put him through. He’s such a good boy :)
